I HAVE BEEN A LONG TIME AWAY FROM MY HOME TOWN ,,,,BIRKENHEAD.I NOW LIVE IN BELGIUM,AND I HAVE SEEN THE FIELDS OF STONE.RECENTLY I AND MY GRANSON MATHEW TOOK A VISIT TO THE MENHEIM GATES IN YPRE.MY GRANDSON IS VERY LIKE ME INSOMUCH AS HE RESPECTS THE GREAT LOSS OF LIFE THAT WAS WW1.EVERY MONUMENT WE VISITED WAS EXTREAMLY MOVING .WE SEARCHED FOR OUR FAMILY NAME,AND FOUND IT ON COLUME 6 ON THE GATE ARCH.AS MY FAMILY NAME IS QUITE RARE,I WAS SUPRISED TO FIND THAT HE WAS A GREAT UNCLE OF MINE WHO,ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHER SOLDIERS HAD DIED IN THE FIRST BATTLE OF YPRE.DESPITE THE FACT THAT I HAD NEVER MET HIM ,LET ALONE KNEW OF HIM ,A WAVE OF EMOTION WASHED OVER ME AND I CRIED LIKE A CHILD.I'M SORRY TO SAY THAT NONE OF MY FAMILY,SAVE MYSELF AND MY GRANDSON WERE EVER AWARE OF HIS EXISTANCE!I HAVE MANY PICTURES OF THE FIELDS OF STONE ,BUT WHEN WE WENT TO A VERY SPECIAL PLACE ,TRACING THE ROUTE OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE(WW11).IT WAS A GRAVE YARD CONSISTING OF WELL OVER A 100 STONES.I CRIED LIKE A CHILD ONCE MORE AS I WATCHED MY GRANDSON BRUSH AWAY THE DIRT ON EVERY ONE OF THOSE STONES,JUST TO MAKE SURE IT COULD BE SEEN. HE'S ONLY 16! BUT THAT LITTLE ACT SHOWED ME IT WAS'NT ALL FOR NOTHING THAT THOSE MEN HAD GIVEN THEIR ALL.

I think it is really important to keep alive the memories of Wilfred Owen. It's good that Dean is brinigng Wilfred's heritage to the forefront in Wirral, as there is not enough about Wilfred's work known locally, or that he went to Birkenhead Institute. I've also set up a Flickr site for Wilfred Owen, which can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wilfredowen. This site contains many items about Wilfred, the Birkenhead Insitute, and also several items courtesy of Dean Johnson.Dean's tribute to Wilfred Owen is a great portrayal of Wilfred's work and shows the horrors of war, and Dean's interpretation is excellent.
